Borders are used in spreadsheets to show the math. Think about a column of numbers: at the bottom of the column there is a line, or a border. Under that line could be the SUM or AVERAGE, or some calculated number.

Try it: Add a Bottom Border

Select Cell A1: Our Products.

Go to Home->Font ->Borders.

Click on Bottom Border.

What Do You See? The border is black. The selection box around Cell A1 is black as well. The bottom border may look invisible when Cell A1 is selected. (A black bear in a black cave...)

Please Tab to the next Cell. Can you see the bottom border on Cell A1, now?

Memo to Self: The borders are applied to the Cell, not the data in the Cell.
