Office 2007 was redesigned based on user experiences. The design teams
determined the tools that people used the most and placed them "up
front." The menus were replaced with Ribbons. Ribbons are Tabs of
functions that work together.
For example, all of the options for making a Mail
Merge have been gathered on the Mailings tab.
Some tool bars are activated when you need them. When
you click on a picture, the Picture Tools are displayed. When
you click back on text, the Picture Tools are turned off.
Each Ribbon may have many Groups, and
Commands. In the example on this page, the Font group
includes Bold, Italic, Underline, etc.
Office 2010 builds on that rich Ribbon experience.
